How to Deal with Uncertainty, Fear, Frustration or Anger

When our needs and expectations are unmet it creates upset and suffering. We feel an aversion to people, sometimes avoiding or even pushing them away. It’s often not external factors that causes our suffering, rather it is our attitude.

Yale psychology professor and expert in positive psychology, Laurie Santos, explains how we can stay positive when facing aversion, uncertainty, fear, frustration or anger. “All of those negative emotions — they’re not going away,” says Santos. “You need to give them space. One technique is to use meditation, where you really try to recognize and accept those emotions. RAIN: recognize, accept, investigate and nurture.”

What does that look like?

  1. Whenever you experience an aversion to something, frustration, or fear, acknowledge it. Say to yourself “OK, that’s what it feels like. I’m in that state right now.”
  2. Then investigate what it feels like in your body. Are you getting tense or starting to perspire? Is your heart beating faster?
  3. Do you want to run away from those emotions, and self-soothe with food or alcohol? This is when it is important to accept and nurture your emotions. You do not need to “shut off” or run from negative emotions. You CAN handle them if you accept them.

Acceptance means acknowledging what we are feeling or experiencing whether we like it or not. It allows us to fully absorb what is happening and assess how we can skillfully respond.

Movement

It is natural to want to curl up and get stagnant right now, during winter and quarantine. However, staying active not only is good for your physical health, it also great for your mental health!

One study found that regular cycling or gym-based aerobic exercise was as effective as medication and psychotherapy for treating depression. But you don’t need to hit the gym in order to enjoy improved mental health. Research from Harvard suggests that even slow, methodical movement (like meditative movement, yoga, or tai chi) can measurably decrease your risk of depression. Perhaps this is the year you’ll take up jogging, swimming or another outdoor activity that combine nature with movement?
